Security or surveillance cameras are very well regarded as great crime-deterrent devices that should be included in any home or property defense plan. This view is apparently confirmed by a poll conducted by 3VR a couple of years back (which is a top video surveillance/intelligence company) on whether they believe surveillance cameras do work as crime deterrents.
The results of the survey were released sometime in April of 2011 and clearly indicated that majority of Americans felt safer when they see security cameras around and that about 60% of the 1,900 respondents support the use of such devices in preventing the occurrence of crime in public locations. Survey participants believe that the best beneficiaries of such security devices are banks and parking lots.
Another interesting result revealed that majority of Americans perceive that security cameras are used in banks, parking lots, malls, retail stores and government buildings and that they expect that law enforcement agencies to collaborate closely with these establishments in using surveillance footages to solve crimes and catch criminal perpetrators.
Al Shipp, the CEO of 3VR believe that the public recognizes the importance of video surveillance in improving security and safety in public locations exactly because the footages truly can help in providing reliable evidence in the apprehension and prosecution of criminals. Technological advancements in the field are giving us the ability to make use of camera footages to help identify and catch people suspected of committing crimes.
Below is a list of other information gleaned from the survey:
- A vast majority (higher than 80%) of seniors aged 65 and above supported the use of video surveillance in public but only about 46% of those aged between 18 and 29 shared this opinion.
- About 65% of women respondents view security cameras as crime deterrent and only about 56% of men respondents share this perception. Men were also seen as more likely to oppose the use of video cameras as crime deterrent.
It is pretty clear from the above survey that security cameras indeed have a positive effect on the security and safety in public places. These effects aren’t only psychological because these devices actually help not only in deterring crime but in helping enforcers catch criminals. There is no doubt that these devices are some of the top devices that you can use out there and will surely benefit not only public areas but also privately owned properties like your home.
